Support Chief Justice Torkornoo – Afenyo-Markin tells judiciary

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has urged the judiciary to unite. He wants them to defend their institution amid concerns over Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo's suspension.

Afenyo-Markin spoke during a petition presentation by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the Supreme Court. This event was part of the ongoing “Save the Judiciary” protest.

On May 5, 2025, he called the Chief Justice's suspension a threat to judicial independence. He emphasized that it also threatens democratic stability.

“The judiciary is our last hope,” he stated. “What is happening undermines our democracy.” He criticized the attack on Torkonoo as based on a "flimsy pedestrian petition."

He expressed disappointment in the Council of State for failing the government. Afenyo-Markin urged judges to set aside personal differences. He reminded them that their institution is under attack.

He warned, “Maybe today it is Torkonoo, tomorrow it may be you.” Judges should not serve at the whims of political parties or governments.
