Supreme Court hears injunction application against CJ's removal today

The Supreme Court will hear injunction applications today. These applications are against President John Dramani Mahama's actions regarding Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

On March 27, 2025, MP Vincent Ekow Assafuah sued the Attorney General. He claims the president breached the constitution by referring three petitions to the Council of State. The Chief Justice was not notified about these petitions.

Assafuah argues that the president violated Article 146 of the constitution. He says Mahama did not inform or hear from the Chief Justice before escalating the matter. This action also breaches her security of tenure.

In late March, President Mahama gave the Chief Justice ten days to respond to the petitions. He expressed disappointment that she went public with her concerns before he reviewed them.

On April 5, the Supreme Court adjourned hearing of this case indefinitely. This decision was due to a training program for fifty state attorneys.
