Suspect in $2m Sky Train scandal Prof Ameyaw-Akumfi pleads not guilty

Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi, former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), has pleaded not guilty. He faces charges of causing financial loss to the state.

His plea was taken on Monday, May 26. His lawyer, Duke Aaron Sasu, informed the court that Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi was hospitalized earlier that week.

The Attorney General filed charges related to the $2 million Sky Train scandal. The charges involve both Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi and Solomon Asamoah, former CEO of GIIF.

They are accused of transferring public funds into a private account. This account belongs to Africa Investor Holdings for a Sky Train project that never happened.

The charges cite a $2 million payment made in 2019 for this project. The funds were disbursed without board approval in February 2019.

This unauthorized release triggered criminal proceedings against them. Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi claims he approved the transfer based on Solomon Asamoah's recommendation.

Neither man has accounted for the missing funds so far. Solomon Asamoah was arrested on May 13, 2025, and granted bail afterward.

However, he remains in custody because he could not meet bail conditions set a week ago.
