Suspect in $2m Sky Train scandal Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi rushed to hospital

Former Board Chair of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, has been hospitalized.

He missed a second court appearance in the Sky Train trial due to ill health. His lawyer, Duke Aaron Sasu, informed the court about his condition on Tuesday morning.

The presiding judge, Justice Comfort Tasiame, expressed concern over Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi’s medical issues. These emergencies seem to coincide with scheduled court dates. The case has been adjourned to Monday, May 26, at 10:00 a.m.

The Office of the Attorney General filed charges related to the $2 million Sky Train scandal. Charges were brought against Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi and Solomon Asamoah.

Reports indicate that a $2 million payment was made in 2019 for an urban Sky Train system in Accra. This project was never executed. Court documents show that funds were disbursed without necessary board approval.

Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi is named as the second accused in this case. He stated he approved the transfer based on a recommendation from Solomon Asamoah, then CEO of GIIF. Neither have accounted for the missing funds.

Solomon Asamoah was granted bail after his arrest on May 13, 2025. He appeared before the High Court in Accra after charges were filed against him and Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi. However, he remains in custody for failing to meet bail conditions imposed last week.
