Ghanaian security operatives have arrested Bright Mensah Bonsu. He is accused of selling a prime diplomatic property owned by Ghana's High Commission in Nigeria.
Sources say Mensah Bonsu received $1.5 million in cash. He signed documents to sell the property, valued at $5.3 million, without permission.
Mensah Bonsu claimed to be a special aide to the late Ghana High Commissioner, Alhaji Rashid Bawa. However, investigations showed he was not affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Ghana High Commission in Nigeria.
The $1.5 million payment did not go into government accounts. There is no record of this cash being declared at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa commented on the arrest. He stated, “We promised that justice will be done, and we are keeping our word.”
He emphasized that the government will not protect anyone involved in this scam. “The Mahama administration would not shield anyone who played a role in this grand conspiracy,” he added.
The government is looking into how Mensah Bonsu obtained a diplomatic passport. They are also investigating his claims about acting on instructions from superiors.
Ablakwa reiterated that no diplomatic property belonging to Ghana is for sale. He warned that severe consequences await anyone who challenges their resolve.
“Let me state for the umpteenth time, no diplomatic property belonging to the people of Ghana is for sale,” he said.
