Suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has filed a petition. She wants the Supreme Court to bar two justices from her removal proceedings. The justices are Gabriel Scott Pwamang and Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu.
Her application was submitted by former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame. It follows allegations that the justices met privately with a lawyer involved in her case.
The writ names Justices Pwamang and Adibu-Asiedu, along with other defendants. These include former Auditor-General Daniel Yao Domelevo, Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo, and Professor James Sefah Dzisah.
Justice Torkornoo requests that the committee stop any actions related to her removal inquiry. She is currently suspended by President John Mahama under Article 146 of the Constitution.
This suspension is pending the outcome of the inquiry into three petitions against her. Her latest move raises concerns about the integrity of the ongoing process.
Alfred Ababio Kumi has also petitioned for the dissolution of the five-member committee investigating Torkornoo. This follows a prima facie case established by the President and Council of State.
Kumi claims that on May 15, 2025, several justices were seen dining with Thaddeus Sory, a lawyer for one petitioner. This meeting occurred between 7:30 PM and 8:30 PM at Santoku Restaurant in Accra.
Kumi argues this meeting compromises the integrity of the inquiry process. He believes it warrants immediate dissolution of the committee.
He noted that witnesses overheard discussions about Torkornoo's petition during this dinner. Kumi emphasized that such meetings undermine public confidence in judicial processes.
He criticized Justices Pwamang and Adibu-Asiedu for meeting outside official hours at an unofficial location. He pointed out that Justice Pwamang had previously ruled in favor of Sory’s client.
Kumi concluded his petition by calling for immediate action to preserve justice's integrity in this matter.
