Suspended Chief Justice has right to choose trial venue - Ansa-Asare

Kwaku Ansa-Asare, former Director of the Ghana School of Law, spoke on JoyNews’ The Pulse. He discussed suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo's right to be consulted about her trial venue.

Ansa-Asare emphasized that the venue choice should respect her status. He noted that it must align with constitutional principles for a fair trial.

He reminded the public that Torkornoo is still the Chief Justice of Ghana. Any action undermining her dignity should be avoided, he cautioned.

He referenced Article 18 of the 1992 Constitution. This article guarantees the right to a fair hearing and suggests considering public policy and safety when choosing a venue.

Ansa-Asare stated that if a suitable venue is chosen, Torkornoo should have input. He believes the committee should accommodate both parties' interests in this matter.

He stressed that even though she is under investigation, she is not an ordinary defendant. The Chief Justice deserves special consideration during this process.

“We must remember she is the Chief Justice being probed,” he added.
