Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai has urged calm after the suspension of Chief Justice Mrs. Gertrude Torkornoo. President John Mahama suspended her, and Srem-Sai asked Ghanaians not to politicise this “technical and legal issue.”
In an interview on The Pulse on Joy News, he explained that the suspension is constitutional. It allows the Chief Justice time to prepare her defense against allegations in a formal petition.
Srem-Sai noted that public discourse has heated up since the President's announcement. He referenced a poll showing many Ghanaians support removing the Chief Justice but warned against hasty conclusions.
“At this stage, we don’t know if the allegations are proven,” he said. “Just because a case exists doesn’t mean she is guilty.”
He criticized premature comments from some political figures. Such statements could undermine the integrity of the constitutional process, he argued.
“It’s unfair to judge people involved without seeing the petition,” he added. He called for patience as the investigation continues.
Srem-Sai stated that due process has been followed so far. He encouraged Ghanaians to wait for findings before passing judgment.
“There will be a time when we can determine guilt or innocence,” he said. “For now, we must observe how things unfold.”
