TEWU-TUC urges GTEC to stay neutral in ongoing union dispute

The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union of the Trades Union Congress (TEWU-TUC Ghana) has made a request. They want the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to stay neutral. This comes after a strike by TEWU-Ghana at KNUST.

The strike began on April 30, 2025. It protested the exclusion of some members from the university's new governing council. However, the strike ended on May 5 after discussions with GTEC.

TEWU-TUC stated that the breakaway group formed when local leaders were removed from office. This happened after their tenure expired, which violated union rules. On May 8, General Secretary King James Azortibah spoke to the media.

He stressed that TEWU-TUC is committed to protecting its members and structures. He urged GTEC’s Director-General, Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, to respect the law and remain neutral. He expects GTEC to advise university management on discipline and discourage strikes.

Azortibah expressed disappointment over some university officials supporting the breakaway group. He insisted this behavior should be condemned. He called for strict adherence to public university laws.

Joshua Ansah, Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress, also spoke out. He supported TEWU-TUC and promised justice for their members. Ansah stated they would resist any attempts to undermine decisions made by the President and Minister of Education until their members are reinstated on councils.
