TTH Doctors defend colleague after clash with Akandoh

The Doctors Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH) is very concerned. They believe there has been a misrepresentation of facts about one of their members. This follows an incident at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department.

The incident happened on April 22, 2025. It occurred during a surprise visit by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh. A video of a verbal exchange between the minister and the department head went viral. This led to public criticism and extensive media coverage.

In a statement, DATTH clarified that their colleague was discussing a referred patient. He was explaining the patient's condition and challenges faced in care. Unfortunately, this discussion turned into a verbal exchange that was taken out of context.

DATTH stated that their colleague has worked hard and professionally in critical care. They believe media reports have been unfair and damaged his reputation. The association criticized the public interrogation of the doctor as inappropriate. They see it as a breach of professional protocol and patient confidentiality.

DATTH urges the media to be careful with sensitive matters involving patient care. They also ask the public not to spread unverified information about medical professionals. While waiting for an investigation by the Health Ministry, DATTH supports the doctor involved.

They warned that ongoing vilification of health personnel could disrupt industrial harmony. "It is unfair to blame doctors for poor outcomes when resources are lacking," they said. If this trend continues, they may consider their options.

Additionally, DATTH announced an emergency meeting for all doctors at Tamale Teaching Hospital. They will discuss this matter and decide on future actions.

Meanwhile, minority leaders condemned what they called the "unlawful" dismissal of the hospital's CEO.
