TTH Doctors deserve an apology – Akim Oda MP tells Akandoh

Akim Oda MP Alexander Akwasi Acquah has called for an apology. He wants Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Tamale North MP Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini to apologize to medical staff at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH).

The doctors’ strike is disrupting emergency and outpatient services. This strike began after a tense incident during a visit by the Health Minister and the Tamale North MP. They reportedly had a heated argument with Dr. Valentine Akwulpwa, head of the Accident and Emergency Unit.

In response, TTH doctors suspended emergency and outpatient services indefinitely. They cited “unwarranted attacks” on their colleague as the reason. The doctors demand formal apologies to Dr. Akwulpwa and all emergency department personnel. They will not return to work until their concerns are addressed.

On Eyewitness News, MP Akwasi Acquah urged reconciliation through an apology. He stated, “If the doctors are calling for an apology, it sits in its right place.” He believes they should do the honorable thing so everyone can move on.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Akandoh has asked striking doctors to return to work. This request follows the dismissal of TTH’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Adam Atiku. His dismissal was linked to alleged negligence that led to a patient’s death in the Accident and Emergency Ward.

In a recent press briefing, Akandoh reaffirmed his commitment to improving healthcare at TTH. He pledged reforms aimed at enhancing hospital operations and staff welfare. Akandoh also expressed that he meant no disrespect during his visit and hopes to end the strike soon.
