TTH acting CEO: We expect doctors to resume work soon

Dr. Salifu Alhassan Tiah is the Director of Pharmacy at Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH). He is also the Acting Chief Executive Officer. He hopes that striking doctors will soon return to work. They need to resume emergency and outpatient services.

Doctors at TTH started their strike on April 23. They cited a hostile work environment and a lack of medical supplies. They also mentioned demeaning treatment from government officials. The strike followed an emergency meeting by the Doctors’ Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH).

Tensions rose during a visit by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh on April 22. This visit led to a heated exchange with medical staff. As a result, doctors are demanding apologies from both the Health Minister and MP Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini.

The doctors want these apologies directed to Dr. Valentine Akwulpwa and all medical staff, especially the Accident and Emergency Department team. After meeting with the association, Dr. Tiah shared their concerns with journalists.

He said, “We met with the leadership of DATTH, who explained the situation.” He added that one officer involved in the altercation is traumatized. Dr. Tiah expressed hope that by Thursday, April 24, they would hear good news about ending the strike.

Hospital authorities are working with all parties involved to restore services. They aim to ensure a peaceful working environment for everyone at TTH.
