TTH resumes full operations after doctors suspend strike

The Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) has resumed full medical services. This follows the suspension of a strike by its doctors. Normal activities had been disrupted since April 23, 2025.

The doctors called off their strike after a meeting with Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh on April 26, 2025. The strike began after a tense incident during an unannounced visit by the minister. This visit led to a heated argument with Dr. Valentine Akwulpwa, head of the Accident and Emergency Unit.

In response to this incident, TTH doctors suspended emergency and outpatient services indefinitely. They cited “unwarranted attacks” on their colleagues as the reason for their action. The doctors demanded formal apologies for Dr. Akwulpwa and all emergency department staff.

On April 25, a delegation from Yaa Naa Abukari II's palace intervened to help resolve the situation. After this intervention, only the accident and emergency department resumed operations initially.

Following the meeting with the health minister, TTH's doctors' association issued a statement. They asked all members to suspend the strike and return to work immediately. The statement read: “The DATTH calls off the suspension of services.”
