Dr. Salifu Alhassan Tia is the Head of Pharmacy at Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH). He stated that the hospital's return to emergency services is only a partial step. The national doctors’ association has not yet resolved the ongoing strike.
His comments follow the reopening of the Accident and Emergency Department. This came after intervention from Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II, the Overlord of Dagbon. However, other departments at TTH remain closed as negotiations continue.
The strike had greatly affected healthcare delivery at TTH. Traditional leaders from Dagbon helped mediate in this situation. Their involvement led to the resumption of emergency medical services.
In an interview on Eyewitness News, Dr. Tia highlighted the importance of Yaa Naa’s role. He noted that full service restoration depends on ongoing discussions in Accra.
“It was difficult, but we realized it was important to call off,” he said. He explained that local leadership could not fully resolve the strike without national input.
Currently, some emergency cases are being handled again at TTH. Doctors are back to work in the accident and emergency unit. However, a complete return to normal operations relies on talks between hospital leaders and the Ministry of Health.
A Dagbon envoy criticized TTH leadership for their handling of the doctors’ strike.
