Bernard Owusu, Chairman of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), is urging the government to revoke Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462. This law allows mining in Ghana’s forest reserves.
In an interview with Channel One TV on May 1, Mr. Owusu emphasized that amending the law is not enough. He stated, “We are still asking government to go to Parliament to revoke that L.I.” He noted that the government's plan to amend it does not meet their demands.
L.I. 2462 has faced strong criticism from environmental activists and the public. They argue it worsens environmental damage caused by illegal mining, known as galamsey.
There are signs that Parliament may repeal this controversial law soon. This could indicate a change in policy due to ongoing public pressure.
