TUC reiterates opposition to privitisation of ECG

The Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC) opposes the Government's plan to privatise the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

In its comments on the 2025 Budget Statement, the TUC recalled its stance from 2017. Back then, they opposed the privatisation of ECG under the Akufo-Addo Government.

The TUC warned that workers and their unions would resist any attempts to privatise state assets. In their 2025 submission to the Mahama Government, they reiterated this opposition.

They stated, “We will resist any attempt to privatise ECG.” The TUC emphasized that they view privatisation and private sector participation as the same issue.

Despite their opposition, the Government seems determined to privatise ECG. The TUC believes that removing politics from ECG is essential for solving its challenges.

Their resolve against privatisation is stronger than ever. The TUC noted that the 2025 Budget comes amid many economic challenges in Ghana.

They pointed out that economic growth is just starting to recover after COVID-19. Inflation remains high, and living costs have surged.

Real incomes have fallen for most workers. Joblessness is widespread, especially among young people. The national debt is unsustainable despite a debt exchange programme.

Many of these issues have persisted for years due to a flawed economic management framework. The TUC criticized the 2025 budget for failing to reset this framework effectively.

They urge the government to collaborate with stakeholders to change current economic policies. Ghana needs a new model focused on improving its economy's structure.

The TUC stressed that job creation should be central to economic policy. They believe Ghana must maximize benefits from its natural resources.

This approach would help fund national development through domestic revenues and reduce borrowing needs.
