The Trades Union Congress (TUC) opposes plans to privatize the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). They warn this could raise electricity costs and cause job losses.
At a press conference in Accra, TUC General Secretary Timothy Nyame spoke out. He said ECG's issues stem from political interference, not inefficiency.
Nyame highlighted problems like politically motivated meter distribution and unstable leadership. He also mentioned procurement interference as factors hurting the company.
He believes that with proper reforms, ECG can operate effectively without private involvement.
The TUC argues that privatization would not solve ECG’s main issues. It could also threaten energy security and economic equity.
“ECG remains a critical national asset,” the union stated. They added that a private takeover is not a sustainable solution.
