The Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC) has made a call to action. They urge the Government to pass the Occupational Safety, Health and Environment (OSHE) Bill. This is crucial for protecting workers in Ghana.
TUC Secretary-General Joshua Ansah emphasized this in a statement. He urged employers and governments across Africa to invest in OSHE. This investment aims to reduce preventable deaths and injuries at work.
Every year, the World Day for Safety and Health is observed on April 28. It honors those who are killed or injured while working. The theme for this year is “Emerging Technologies and their Impact on Workers’ Health and Safety.”
As we face the Fourth Industrial Revolution, emerging technologies play a significant role. These technologies impact the health and safety of workers profoundly. The rapid integration of AI, robotics, and IoT transforms industries quickly.
While these advancements offer benefits like increased efficiency, they also pose risks. New challenges can affect workers' health and safety negatively. For example, automation can improve working conditions but may also introduce new hazards.
Wearable devices can monitor health but prolonged use may cause disorders. There are concerns about physical health risks from sedentary lifestyles as well. Mental health issues may arise due to stress from rapid technological changes.
Workers may feel uncertain about job security due to automation fears. This could lead to skills becoming obsolete and potential job losses. To address these issues, TUC urges thorough risk assessments by policymakers and employers.
They recommend developing strategies to mitigate potential hazards effectively. Prioritizing workers' health and safety is essential as we navigate these changes.
The TUC believes that collaboration can harness technology's benefits while minimizing negative impacts. They invite all stakeholders to join them in ensuring a safe future of work for everyone.
