The Bishop of the Northern Accra Diocese of the Methodist Church, Right Reverend Andrew Mbeah-Baiden, spoke out yesterday. He urged the government to commit seriously to fighting illegal mining, known as galamsey.
He warned that galamsey threatens the country's existence. It also undermines national sovereignty.
“People from other countries can easily enter and engage in these illegal practices,” he said. “We look helplessly as this continues.”
Rt Rev. Mbeah-Baiden made these remarks during the Seventh Annual Synod Thanksgiving Service. This event took place at the Gbawe Circuit, Resurrection Society of the Methodist Church, Ghana.
