Tain MP raises concerns over ECG’s financial mismanagement and missing containers

Sulemana Adams, the Member of Parliament for Tain Constituency, has raised concerns about the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). He is particularly worried about missing containers at Tema port.

Sulemana pointed out major discrepancies between ECG's budget and actual spending. He described this situation as alarming. Over recent years, ECG's spending patterns have raised serious questions about management practices.

In 2022, ECG spent over seven billion Ghana Cedis. This amount far exceeded the allocated budget of 1.2 billion. The trend continued in 2023 and 2024, with ECG spending eight billion Ghana Cedis against an allocation of only 1.5 billion.

He noted that these financial inconsistencies suggest possible mismanagement and resource wastage. Sulemana criticized how contracts were awarded at ECG. The Managing Director can award contracts up to one billion Ghana Cedis.

However, the company signed 20 contracts worth 900 million each to bypass this limit. “These practices raise questions about accountability and responsible management at ECG,” he stated.

He stressed that leadership must be held accountable for these discrepancies. This accountability is essential for efficient use of public resources. Sulemana also called for collaboration between politicians and technocrats to improve management practices in state institutions.

Ensuring transparency and efficiency at ECG is vital for industrial growth and national development. He urged authorities to investigate issues at ECG thoroughly, especially regarding the missing containers at Tema port. This investigation is crucial to protect the company's financial integrity and maintain public trust.
