President John Dramani Mahama announced plans to ban Styrofoam plastics. This includes takeaway packs used for food. The decision aims to reduce environmental pollution in Ghana.
Mahama highlighted that Styrofoam is a major pollutant. It is widely used in food packaging, which makes it harmful.
At an event for World Environment Day, he said, “That is one of the biggest polluters.” He emphasized the need to switch to paper or aluminum packaging. He informed manufacturers and importers about the upcoming ban.
He stated, “With the Ministry of Environment, we will soon ban Styrofoam.” Food packaging will transition to paper and aluminum materials.
Ebbo Botwe leads the Plastic Manufacturers Association of Ghana. He urged Mahama not to rush into banning takeaway packs. Botwe believes proper consultation is necessary for this decision.
On CITI FM, he explained that Styrofoam contains only 4% to 5% plastic. The rest is air, making it less impactful on the environment.
Botwe mentioned a meeting with the Minister for Environment from June 16 to 20. They aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the plastic industry before any decisions are made.
