The Ghana Union of Traders’ Association (GUTA) has criticized the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC). They oppose recent utility tariff hikes. GUTA finds PURC's justification unconvincing and insensitive to economic hardships.
PURC announced a 14.75% increase in electricity tariffs. Water charges will rise by 4.02%, effective May 3, 2025. PURC explained that these increases are due to various economic factors. These include the exchange rate, inflation projections, and fuel costs.
GUTA's General Secretary, Alpha A. Shaban, rejected PURC's rationale. He stated that the reasons “do not hold water.” GUTA acknowledged that changes are sometimes necessary but should not be arbitrary.
They urged PURC to eliminate inefficiencies in managing services instead of burdening consumers. GUTA identified waste as a key driver of rising operational costs at ECG and Ghana Water Limited.
The group also criticized the public sector for corruption. They claimed it has become a "gold mine" for personal enrichment among officials.
GUTA called on the government to address misappropriation and corruption in state institutions. They urged action against theft and misuse of state funds or property. The statement concluded with a plea for decisive measures to recover stolen assets.
