Tarkwa Nsuaem: W/Regional Minister storms Bonsar with security personnel as illegal mining intensifies

The Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, visited illegal mining sites at Bonsar. He was accompanied by security forces to remove illegal miners. These miners are polluting the Bonsar River daily.

After the operation, Minister Nelson stated that efforts will continue. The goal is to clear the river banks of illegal mining activities. They aim to restore the water bodies to their natural states.

He mentioned logistical challenges but emphasized the need for action. Illegal mining has taken over the region's water bodies.

The pollution level in the river is alarming. It has forced Ghana Water Company Limited to halt operations in the area.

"We have received reports about Galamsey activities along the Bonsar River," he said. These activities hinder Ghana Water Company’s ability to supply potable water. This affects Tarkwa Municipality and nearby areas.

"I came to see things for myself, and my fears were confirmed," he remarked angrily.

The operation led by the Minister lasted two hours on April 10, 2025. At Bonsar, three suspects were caught at various mining sites. Security forces quickly apprehended them.

The Minister described illegal mining as reckless and careless. "It is sad to see a river like Bonsar reduced to this," he said. The river is heavily silted and cannot be processed for clean water.

He noted that turbidity levels are extremely high—around 7000 instead of 50-100. This increases costs and reduces water supply for Tarkwa and surrounding areas.

Those arrested include Joshua Boateng, 20; Joshua Kyere Ishmael, 24; and Godwin Bagbetor, 29.

Additionally, security forces destroyed all equipment at the mining sites. They burned water pumping machines, solar panels, diesel, petrol gallons, and temporary sheds.

Minister Nelson acknowledged logistical challenges but promised solutions. He aims to work closely with stakeholders and security forces against illegal mining. "I am committed to decisively addressing this issue," he concluded.
