The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) plans to take action starting June 1, 2025. This is if the Ghana Education Service (GES) does not address violence against teachers.
NAGRAT President Angel Carbonu spoke about this on Citi Eyewitness News. He highlighted the urgent need for self-protection in schools. “The first order of life is self-preservation,” he said.
Carbonu emphasized that teachers may need to arm themselves for safety. “We will have to protect ourselves,” he stated. He expressed concern over students harming teachers during their duties.
These comments follow several incidents where teachers faced physical assaults or threats from students. Such events have raised national concerns about school discipline and safety.
NAGRAT has criticized the government and GES for their slow response to these issues. They warn that continued inaction could lead to serious consequences for educators. The association demands immediate measures to ensure teacher safety across the country.
