The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur, has taken action to protect marine biodiversity. She inaugurated a 13-member Technical Advisory Committee (TAC). This committee will guide the establishment and management of marine protected areas (MPAs).
The TAC's main role is to support the Ministry and Fisheries Commission. They will help with policy formulation, stakeholder coordination, and technical guidance. Their focus is on implementing and monitoring MPAs across the country.
Additionally, the committee aims to strengthen coastal ecosystems and local livelihoods. They will also work on replenishing fish stocks.
During the induction ceremony, Minister Arthur highlighted the importance of MPAs. She stated that sustainable fisheries management is crucial for conserving marine biodiversity. It also helps improve the livelihoods of coastal communities.
Arthur reaffirmed the government's commitment to science-based resource management. The new TAC includes experts in marine science, environmental planning, governance, and community engagement.
The committee members are Dr. Evans Kwasi Arizi (Chair), Esi B. Quayson (Vice Chair), Emmanuel Dovlo, Armah Michael, Malcolm Yensaw, and Peace D. Gbeckor-Koe.
Other members include Ebenezer Ntsiful, Prof. F.K.E. Nunoo, Nana Jojo Solomon, Ismael Nii Adjei Browne, Abena Serwah Asante , Stephen Kankam, and Nana Kwesi Agyeman.
