Telecel outdoors 2025 female engineering students scholarship programme beneficiaries

Ten talented female engineering students were awarded scholarships at Telecel Ghana. The ceremony took place at the company's headquarters in Accra.

The beneficiaries include four students from the University of Ghana, three from the University of Mines and Technology, and one each from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Cape Coast, and Ghana Communications Technology University. Each student will receive GHS 5,000 for tuition. They will also get a tablet with six months of free data access.

Additionally, they will have mentorship from experienced female professionals at Telecel. There are internship opportunities and priority for full-time roles as well. Since 2011, the Female Engineering Students Scholarship Programme (FESSP) has supported 100 female engineering students across five universities.

Female retention in engineering is low globally. According to UNESCO, women make up only 16.5% of the engineering workforce worldwide. This number decreases further in leadership roles.

Ing. Patricia Obo-Nai, Chief Executive of Telecel Ghana, shared her journey with the new cohort. She encouraged them to embrace opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). “I started as an intern and progressed through various roles,” she said.

She advised them to stay curious and ask mentors questions. “Make the most of this opportunity,” Ing. Obo-Nai added.

This year, 48 candidates were considered for FESSP; 21 advanced to interviews. Rachael Appenteng, Human Resource Director at Telecel Ghana, spoke about the initiative's importance for STEM advancement.

“You were chosen for your talent and potential,” she said. “We believe in you and support your journey.”

Megan Nana Aba Welsing is a final-year Computer Engineering student at the University of Ghana. She expressed fulfillment in receiving this scholarship after years of hard work.

“I’m excited to find my niche in the working field,” Megan said. She hopes to develop her soft skills through mentorship and practical experience.

Madam Christiana is a mother of one recipient who expressed gratitude for this investment in young women’s futures through mentorship and financial support.

Telecel Ghana remains committed to diversity and inclusion as a Top Employer for seven consecutive years.
