Tema Central NDC calls for peace, unity over MCE appointment

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Constituency Executive Committee of Tema Central is calling for calm. They want unity amid tensions over the new Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) appointment for Tema Metro.

This appeal follows protests by some youth in Tema. They are demanding that President John Dramani Mahama appoint a local as the next Mayor. Tensions have risen due to reports suggesting Ebi Bright may be considered for the role. This is despite earlier indications that Patience Ankamah Addo was likely to be nominated.

On Sunday, April 13, the Constituency Executive Committee released a statement. They urged party members, supporters, and residents to respect the constitutional process for appointing an MCE. The committee emphasized avoiding actions that could threaten peace and unity in the municipality.

“At this critical time in our democratic journey, we call on all political party members to remain calm,” the statement read. “We urge stakeholders to refrain from actions or statements that may incite division.”

The committee highlighted that appointing an MCE is a constitutional mandate of the President. It should be done through consultations and in the best interest of the people. They expressed confidence in President Mahama’s ability to choose a competent leader for Tema.

“We appeal to all political actors and community members to unite,” they added. “Let us prioritize collective progress over individual interests.”

The committee reaffirmed its commitment to support any nominee selected by the President. Their goal is peace, unity, and development in Tema Central.
