Tension at Chairman Wontumi’s residence over National Security's attempted arrest

Supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) gathered at the home of their Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi. This happened after an attempted arrest by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) and Ghana Police on May 23, 2025.

In the early morning, heavily armed security personnel surrounded his house. This sparked quick reactions from party loyalists. By mid-morning, a crowd had formed outside in protest. They demanded answers and condemned the show of force.

The reason for the security operation is still unclear. However, sources say Chairman Wontumi was inside during the incident. He assured officers he would appear before them on Monday, May 26, 2025.

As tensions rose and chants filled the air, the NIB ordered all security personnel to withdraw. This eased the immediate standoff but many supporters stayed outside in solidarity.

Kwame Adom-Appiah, NPP Ashanti Regional Secretary and part of Wontumi’s legal team, criticized how the operation was conducted. He stated that arriving with nearly 20 vehicles was excessive for someone not posing a threat to national security.

He argued that this approach was unnecessary and costly for the state. A simple invitation would have sufficed instead. He called for restraint from security services and respect for due process in such high-profile cases.
