Tempers flared on Tuesday after news broke about Bernard Antwi Boasiako's arrest. He is known as Chairman Wontumi and is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Wontumi had gone to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to assist with an undisclosed matter. However, things escalated when officers from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) arrested him. This move shocked many within the party.
Soon after, NPP supporters and regional executives gathered at EOCO’s premises. They demanded answers and access to their chairman. Their numbers grew, turning the usually quiet area into a tense scene.
Security was increased quickly, with military personnel deployed to maintain order. They aimed to prevent any violence from breaking out.
As evening approached, EOCO remained silent about why Wontumi was arrested. This lack of information heightened speculation and concern in political circles.
NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye expressed his frustrations to the press. He criticized EOCO’s actions and claimed they violated the rights of a key party member.
“This situation is unfortunate,” he said. “Denying access to our Regional Chairman raises serious concerns.” He added that they would not tolerate political intimidation disguised as law enforcement.
This incident has worsened tensions in an already strained political atmosphere. The NPP hinted at a coordinated effort against its members ahead of the 2024 elections.
