Tensions flare at EOCO as supporters demand Wontumi’s release

A tense scene unfolded at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Monday, June 2, 2025. Supporters of New Patriotic Party (NPP) member Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, clashed with security officers. They demanded his immediate release.

According to JoyNews, the confrontation started with a heated exchange. Police personnel faced off against members of the growing crowd outside EOCO’s Accra headquarters. The supporters were visibly upset about Chairman Wontumi’s detention.

The situation escalated when demonstrators blocked the main road to EOCO offices. Thirteen individuals sat in the middle of the road, chanting: “Leave Chairman Wontumi Alone!” This disrupted traffic and drew attention to their cause.

A brief scuffle occurred between a police officer and a protester. However, security personnel showed restraint to avoid a larger confrontation.

Despite repeated calls from security forces to disperse, supporters refused to leave. One protester stated, “We won’t move until our chairman is freed. He has done nothing wrong.”

As of now, Chairman Wontumi remains in custody while awaiting bail conditions. EOCO has not released an official statement about the investigation or reasons for his continued detention.
