Tensions rise as NPP supporters besiege NIB headquarters over Wontumi’s transfer

Supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) gathered at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in Accra. They came after reports that Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, had been transferred there.

Tensions are high over Wontumi’s detention. He was arrested four days ago by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). He faces allegations of fraud, money laundering, and other financial crimes.

Wontumi was granted bail set at GH¢50 million. He needs two sureties for his release. However, his legal team has only secured one surety in 48 hours. This means he remains in custody.

JoyNews correspondent James Avedzi reported that NPP supporters arrived in two Sprinter buses. They were transported from EOCO headquarters to the NIB premises after news of Wontumi’s relocation spread.

The supporters chanted slogans and demanded his release. However, they found closed gates at the NIB. Security personnel restricted access to the facility.

Several Members of Parliament and senior party officials were also present. They sought access to the premises but faced similar restrictions.
