“Thaddeus Sory is obsessed with me” - Godfred Dame fires back

Former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame has responded to Thaddeus Sory. He describes Sory's attacks as obsessive and unprofessional. In a statement dated May 24, Dame addressed Sory's recent publication. He accused Sory of being fixated on him for years.

Dame has ignored Sory’s numerous write-ups until now. He felt compelled to respond to what he calls falsehoods. “Your obsession with me is not lost on the public,” he stated. He chose silence for a long time but needed to correct some claims.

One claim that bothered Dame was about never losing a case as Attorney General. He cited his admissions at Bar Conferences in Cape Coast and Kumasi. There, he acknowledged several defeats in the Supreme Court. These defeats show Ghana’s independent judiciary, he explained.

Dame listed examples like the Dormelovo removal case and COVID-19 restrictions case. Most rulings were unanimous against the state, which he accepted in good faith.

He also recalled a courtroom encounter with Sory from 2007–2009. Dame claimed he defeated Sory in both the High Court and Court of Appeal before becoming Attorney General. “Was I the Attorney-General in those years?” he quipped.

Dame suggested that Sory’s criticisms stem from partisan bias. He believes they aim to damage reputations unfairly. He urged Sory to focus on retrieving state funds instead of targeting him.

Dame highlighted his accomplishments beyond Ghana’s borders too. He mentioned successful international arbitration cases without foreign counsel. One case resulted in Ghana winning $2.2 million in costs.

He concluded with a warning about efforts by Sory and others linked to the NDC party. They seem intent on discrediting the judiciary and targeting the Chief Justice.

“I hope this will be my only and final response to you,” Dame wrote, adding, “When Godfred Dame coughs, the whole NDC catches a cold.”
