The CJ's image is dented already; why the in camera hearing? – Prof Oquaye asks

Former Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye, has raised concerns about closed-door inquiries. This includes the investigation into suspended Chief Justice Getrude Torkornoo.

Prof. Oquaye believes the Chief Justice has already suffered damage from her suspension. He questions why the five-member committee, set up by President John Mahama, will conduct its proceedings in secret.

He stated, "The dirty linen has already been washed in public." He expressed that secret trials undermine justice's foundation.

As a constitutional lawyer and statesman, he criticized the constitutional provision allowing such private proceedings.

He also described the process leading to the Chief Justice’s suspension as opaque and troubling.

Prof. Oquaye argued that excluding the public and media risks eroding trust in the judiciary. This could undermine democratic accountability.

The five-member committee is investigating misconduct allegations against the Chief Justice from three petitioners. However, public access to these proceedings is restricted by law.
