The Kuenyehia Prize for Contemporary Art debuts in Lagos

The Kuenyehia Prize for Contemporary Art, known as the ‘Kuenyehia Prize,’ held an awards event in Lagos, Nigeria. This event opened a month-long exhibition featuring the work of 15 finalists for the 2024 Kuenyehia Prize.

This was the first event outside Accra, where the Prize began. It attracted artists, collectors, and cultural enthusiasts. Many attendees traveled from Ghana to Nigeria for this occasion.

Nigerian artist Chinecherem Peace won overall out of 217 applicants. Senegalese artist Djibril Coulibaly and Ghanaian artist Moses Adjei were first and second runners-up.

The winners will share $10,000 in prize money. They will also receive mentorship, international exposure, and career development support. Isaac N.O.B. Ashalley stated that “The Kuenyehia Prize is more than an award—it is a career catalyst.”

Chinecherem Peace expressed gratitude for her recognition. She dedicated her win to "every young African who dares to dream on a blank canvas."

Professor Elikem Nutifafa Kuenyehia founded the prize and opened the night with reflections on African art's power. He shared a story about his early art collecting days.

He recounted how a modest $50 purchase increased significantly in value. This highlighted the potential of often-overlooked African artists.

"When we support our artists, we create shared prosperity," he urged attendees. He encouraged them to reflect Nigerian pride in their creative industries.

Gideon Aryeequaye, Executive Secretary of Ghana’s Creative Arts Agency, was the guest of honor. He delivered an inspiring speech about life being like art: “we are either the art or the artists.”

He urged African societies to view art as essential to cultural identity rather than an accessory.

The evening ended with guests exploring works by the 15 shortlisted artists. They participated in a silent auction and engaged with art reflecting resilience and heritage.

The public exhibition continues until May 24, 2025. It is located at 1952 Africa12a Abeke Animashaun Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.
