The Ghanaian government is planning to introduce a coastal and inland marine transport system. This initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion on the country’s roads.
Currently, feasibility studies are being conducted for this project. It will provide Ghanaians with an alternative mode of transport. This could significantly ease the burden on road infrastructure.
Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe shared his concerns about traffic congestion. He spoke on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey. Nikpe described the situation as a headache for many commuters.
He noted that during rush hours, people spend too much time in traffic. The government is exploring different transport options to help decongest the roads.
Nikpe emphasized Ghana's geographical advantages for water transport. He believes it can be a viable solution to current transportation issues.
“We are blessed with the Ocean,” he said. The plan includes creating a coastal and marine inland water system. This would help reduce passenger volume on roads by utilizing oceans, lakes, and rivers.
Discussions are ongoing to involve the private sector in this initiative. Once the feasibility study is complete, partnerships will be formed. Nikpe hopes to have crafts operating on seas and lakes for transportation soon.
