On Good Morning Ghana, Beatrice Annan reassured Ghanaians about judicial independence. She addressed concerns over the Chief Justice's suspension.
She stated, “The independence of the judiciary is intact.” Justice Baffoe-Bonnie is currently the acting Chief Justice. Lawyers continue to work in court as usual.
Beatrice clarified that the Chief Justice is not the entire judiciary. “The Chief Justice is not synonymous with the judiciary,” she said.
She advised that accepting this distinction would benefit the Chief Justice.
Beatrice defended President John Mahama against claims of political interference. She noted he did not fill the judiciary with judges during his tenure.
“When you have 55 appointments in a short time, it’s unprecedented,” she added.
She insisted President Mahama respected legal processes throughout his presidency. “He never called judges or influenced cases,” she explained.
Many issues arose because they refused to interfere with the judiciary.
When petitions were received, Mahama followed constitutional requirements by referring them to the Council of State. There is no law requiring him to inform the Chief Justice.
Beatrice concluded that the MPP cannot cite any law or practice breached by Mahama. “He has done absolutely nothing wrong,” she affirmed.
