Law professor Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua has sparked a discussion about legal matters in Ghana.
He emphasized that the law applies equally to everyone. “The law is no respecter of persons,” he stated during a panel on Channel One TV.
His remarks came after the GH¢50 million bail condition for Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi. He is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Instead of following legal procedures, the NPP protested on the streets. Some MPs stormed police and EOCO offices in response. Professor Appiagyei-Atua criticized this move as unnecessary and damaging.
He noted that the GH¢50 million bail does not seem excessive given the allegations. “EOCO acted within their authority,” he explained. He added that if the bail terms are too strict, they should apply to the High Court for a change.
According to him, NPP MPs should have known better since many are legal practitioners. They have followed legal procedures before.
Choosing an extralegal approach suggests an intention to politicize the issue, he said.
Professor Appiagyei-Atua also suggested that these actions reflect NPP's struggle in opposition. Influential figures like Chairman Wontumi are now facing legal challenges.
