Lawyer and MP Andy Appiah-Kubi has denied claims about Hon. Kennedy Agyapong's involvement in the bail support for Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi.
In an interview with Kwaku Dawuro on Movement TV, Appiah-Kubi explained that the bail conditions are nearly met. However, the person covering the costs wishes to remain anonymous.
“There are people who prefer to do things without public acknowledgment,” he said. “The one who came forward hasn’t authorized me to mention his name.”
He praised Kennedy Agyapong for helping Prof. Ameyaw Akumfi in another case. However, he insisted that Agyapong did not support Wontumi’s GH₵50 million bail.
Chairman Wontumi was granted bail on May 28, 2025. He needed two sureties for this bail. The decision follows serious allegations being investigated by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). These involve questionable financial transactions linked to the Ghana Export-Import (EXIM) Bank.
On Thursday, Minority MPs staged a dramatic walkout from Parliament. They protested Wontumi’s continued detention despite his bail being granted. They claimed this situation violates his rights and reflects selective justice.
“This is more than a legal matter. It is becoming a political witch-hunt,” one opposition MP stated outside the chamber.
Wontumi's troubles began when he was invited by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service for questioning about illegal mining activities, known as “galamsey.”
After attending this invitation, he was transferred into EOCO custody for further investigation into financial crimes.
Authorities say charges against him include illegal mining without a valid license and destruction of protected forest lands. His actions are believed to have caused significant financial losses to the state by contaminating vital water bodies.
