Dr. Ken Ashigbey leads the Media Coalition Against Galamsey. He has warned President John Dramani Mahama that time is running out to combat illegal mining, known as galamsey.
Ashigbey stated that if the government does not act in two years, the fight will be lost. He emphasized this during an interview on Citi Eyewitness News.
He said, “The window to fight galamsey is closing fast.” If the NDC focuses on choosing a new flagbearer, it will hinder progress against galamsey.
Ashigbey urged all professional bodies to join media efforts. They should support the President when he acts correctly and point out shortcomings.
President Mahama acknowledged that winning the fight against galamsey is complex. He did not expect to resolve it within four months of taking office.
Mahama expressed confidence in his government's determination and the Armed Forces' commitment. He believes they will succeed against companies harming forests and polluting water bodies.
At the 2025 May Day celebration in Accra, he reiterated his stance. “We will continue to score successes against selfish companies,” he said.
He concluded with a strong declaration: “As far as the fight against galamsey is concerned, I say Aluta Continua.”
