Ghanaian blogger Bongo Ideas has mocked the Generational Rights Protection Society (GRPS).
The GRPS held a demonstration against illegal mining (galamsey) on April 28, 2025.
Bongo Ideas called the group a front for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He claimed they aim to undermine the Mahama administration's successes against galamsey.
In a post on X, he stated that Ghana's youth won't believe NPP lies anymore.
He described the demonstration as poorly attended and politically motivated. He argued it did not genuinely seek to help Ghanaians.
Bongo Ideas compared this protest to a youth-led campaign against galamsey in 2024. He wrote, “Protest by Kalyjay vs protest by Okatakyie. The youth have abandoned NPP! It’s over!”
The GRPS aims to pressure the government for stronger action against galamsey.
Led by media personality Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah, they want better handling of illegal mining issues.
They argue that illegal mining harms communities and the environment with little government intervention.
Demonstrators wore red and black clothing at Obra Spot in Circle before marching to Jubilee House.
They carried placards with messages like "Blood, Gold, Greed!" and "Stop Galamsey Now!" showing their determination.
Okatakyire Kwame Afrifa Mensah expressed frustration about ongoing galamsey devastation.
He noted that rising kidney disease cases and deaths are linked to illegal mining.
He pointed out that President Mahama acted quickly within his first four months in office.
In contrast, he criticized the current president for prioritizing personal benefits instead of addressing galamsey issues.
