Tensions are rising over the termination of school feeding contracts.
Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, spoke about this issue. She highlighted the importance of engaging women in dialogue to create change.
On Starr Today with Emmanuel Agyabeng, Dr. Lartey noted that most workers in the school feeding program are women. They can significantly contribute to policy development if engaged properly.
She said, “When I first met them, I told them that since they are mostly women, we should talk about their challenges.”
Their opinions can help improve the ministry and the program for everyone involved.
School feeding caterers have protested by wearing red armbands. They claim their contract terminations are unjust.
While acknowledging their right to protest, Dr. Lartey expressed disappointment in their approach.
She stated, “After our discussions, they choose to wear red bands.”
“It’s their right to express views,” she continued. “But being antagonistic is not healthy for our engagement.”
Despite frustrations, Dr. Lartey balanced empathy with her duty to uphold national interests.
