There is serious attempt to undermine the constitution – Atta Akyea fumes over NIB deployment to Ntim Fordjour’s residence

The legal adviser to Rev. Ntim Fordjour has criticized the deployment of National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) officers to his client's home. He calls this move a serious attempt to undermine Ghana's 1992 Constitution.

Samuel Atta Akyea believes sending NIB personnel without following parliamentary procedures is dangerous. It threatens free speech within Parliament.

He stated, “There is a serious attempt to undermine the Constitution and gag the minority in Parliament.”

Atta Akyea explained that this situation arose from comments made by Rev. Ntim Fordjour in Parliament. According to Article 115 of the Constitution, these remarks are protected and should not lead to intimidation.

He emphasized that Article 115 guarantees freedom of speech and debate in Parliament. This freedom cannot be questioned outside of Parliament.

Mr. Atta Akyea questioned why armed state security would surround an MP's home. He noted that proper parliamentary procedures were not followed in this case.

He pointed out that the Speaker of Parliament had directed any investigations involving MPs should occur within Parliament’s precincts. This is to prevent harassment and interference with their duties.

“If there is a serious issue, authorities should notify the Speaker,” he said. The Speaker can then advise the Member on meeting with investigative bodies.
