They've threatened to impeach me; I'm happy to have you back - Mahama tells Prof Opoku-Agyemang

President John Mahama is relieved by the return of Vice President Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang. He called her return reassuring and politically significant.

He noted that her absence created a significant gap in the administration. Even a short trip to Togo led to impeachment threats against him.

Mahama made these comments on Thursday, May 22, during her welcome back to Ghana. This was his first official response to opposition criticisms about their absence abroad.

The opposition NPP criticized the lack of leadership while he, the Vice President, and the Speaker were out of the country. They argued this violated Article 60 of the 1992 Constitution.

"I particularly have missed you," Mahama said. He mentioned that traveling was difficult without her, as he faced impeachment threats for going to Togo while she was away.

He expressed excitement about her return and welcomed her warmly. The Minority had considered impeachment proceedings over alleged constitutional breaches during his trip.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang left in early April for medical treatment after an illness. She received a warm welcome from Mahama, his wife Lordina, and senior officials at the airport.

Mahama praised her dedication before her leave. He noted that her groundwork helped sustain their social contract program during her absence.

"Since you left your colleagues, we've all missed you," he said. He added that they managed to fulfill many promises despite her absence.

"Ghana is safe, things seem on track," he continued. "You've come at the right time to continue your important work."

The President also emphasized improving healthcare infrastructure in Ghana. He referenced the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) as underutilized but critical for emergencies like hers.

"This raises issues about enhancing our healthcare system," he stated. "We need UGMC equipped properly so we can handle emergencies locally."

Mahama mentioned that doctors declared Prof Opoku-Agyemang fully fit upon her return. He joked that she looked “20 years younger.”

However, he advised her to take it easy as she resumes duties. "Take it slow for a little while," he suggested, adding they would see how things go.
