They lied to Ghanaians – Bawumia slams NDC over ‘dumsor levy’

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He accused the Mahama-led government of breaking campaign promises. He specifically mentioned a new tax on fuel, which he calls the “Dumsor Levy.”

Bawumia spoke in Cape Coast during his final stop of the ‘Thank You Tour’ in the Central Region. He said Ghanaians see a clear contradiction between NDC promises and their actions in government.

“The NDC has told many lies,” he stated. “Everyone sees their lies every day.” He referred to the recently passed Energy Sector Levy Amendment Bill. This bill imposes a GH¢1 tax on every litre of fuel.

He recalled that the NDC had opposed the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) from the previous NPP administration. Now, they have replaced it with a more expensive levy.

“Initially, they said they would scrap the E-Levy,” Bawumia noted. “But now, they have introduced the Dumsor Levy, which is eight times higher.” He explained that buying one litre of petrol now incurs a one cedi tax.

Bawumia provided a comparison to illustrate his point. “If you buy 1,000 cedis worth of fuel, you will pay 83 cedis as tax.” In contrast, sending 1,000 cedis under E-Levy only cost 10 cedis.

He warned Ghanaians to expect more taxes under NDC leadership. “More is yet to come,” he said. By 2028, he believes Ghanaians will realize they were misled.

Looking ahead, Bawumia expressed confidence in future elections. “I believe that by then, they will ask us to come back and govern Ghana properly,” he concluded.
