Thieves steal iron rods from Tantra Hill underpass retaining wall for scraps

The Ministry of Roads and Highways is worried about theft in Accra.

Iron rods are being stolen from the Achimota-bound retaining wall. This wall is located on the south side of the Tantra Hill underpass.

Some individuals are removing the concrete covering at night. They access and cut the iron rods inside.

A viral video shows damaged sections of the wall. The rebars, or reinforcing bars, are exposed and vandalized.

Nasir Ahmad Yartey heads the Public Relations Unit of the Ministry. He noted that this section has weak, porous concrete. This makes it easier for moisture and air to corrode the rebars.

Corrosion causes expansion and cracking in concrete, known as spalling. This further exposes the iron rods and weakens the structure.

Mr. Yartey said this deterioration allows criminals easier access to rebars.

He confirmed that a contractor has been chosen for repairs. All estimates have been completed, and work will start soon.

He assured the public there is no immediate cause for alarm.

Mr. Yartey condemned vandalism targeting public infrastructure. He warned it poses a serious threat to public safety.

He mentioned other incidents like theft from the Accra-Tema Motorway tunnel. Road signs, street lights, and cables have also been destroyed.

“This is becoming too common,” he stated. These acts not only damage infrastructure but also endanger lives.

The ministry urges people to report such crimes immediately. They ask security agencies and local assemblies for help in protecting roads.

“We warn those involved in these activities to stop,” Mr. Yartey cautioned. “Anyone caught will face prosecution.”
