This Saturday on Newsfile: Chief Justice suspension and galamsey take centre stage

This Saturday on Newsfile, host Samson Lardy Anyenini will lead a discussion. The topic is the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by President John Mahama.

President Mahama suspended the Chief Justice after a committee was formed. This committee will investigate petitions filed against her.

The decision came from the Presidency and follows constitutional provisions. It was made in consultation with the Council of State.

The President cited Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution. This article requires a committee to investigate allegations against judges if there is enough evidence.

The statement indicates that sufficient grounds exist for further inquiry.

The panel will discuss whether this situation is unprecedented. They will also consider its implications for judicial independence and constitutional order.

Additionally, they will examine the government's new strategy against illegal mining, known as galamsey.

Earlier this week, the government announced plans regarding confiscated gold. All gold tracked through illegal mining will be sold by the Ghana Gold Board.

Proceeds from these sales will fund reclamation of degraded lands and polluted water bodies. Senior Presidential Advisor Joyce Bawah Mogtari stated that illegally mined gold must not enter the formal market.

She explained that revenue from confiscated gold would help clean up affected environments. This includes rivers and lands damaged by unregulated mining over time.

This policy adds to recent government actions against illegal mining activities. The government revoked all mining licenses held by Akonta Mining Company Limited due to allegations of illegal practices.

The show will explore if these actions mark a turning point in Ghana’s fight against galamsey. They will also discuss what more can be done to prevent environmental destruction caused by it.
