This is a public health emergency – Samira Bawumia calls for urgent action on clean cooking crisis

In a recent address, Samira Bawumia emphasized the urgent need to address the clean cooking crisis in Ghana, labeling it a public health emergency. She highlighted that millions of Ghanaians rely on traditional cooking methods, which often involve burning solid fuels like wood and charcoal. This practice not only contributes to environmental degradation but also poses significant health risks due to indoor air pollution.

Bawumia called for immediate action from stakeholders, including government agencies and non-governmental organizations, to promote cleaner cooking solutions. She underscored the importance of raising awareness about the dangers associated with traditional cooking methods and advocated for the adoption of cleaner alternatives such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and improved cookstoves. These measures could significantly reduce health hazards while also benefiting the environment.

The Vice President's wife urged collaboration among various sectors to ensure that clean cooking initiatives are effectively implemented across communities. By prioritizing this issue, she believes Ghana can improve public health outcomes and foster sustainable development for its citizens.
