Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin is speaking out. He is concerned about political pressure on the judiciary.
After the NPP’s National Executive Committee meeting on April 16, he addressed judges in Ghana. He urged them to resist what he calls a “coordinated move” by the NDC government. This move aims to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Afenyo-Markin stated, “The judiciary isn’t supposed to be a tool in the political game.” He warned that current actions are dangerous. They could turn the courts into a partisan playground.
His comments come amid a legal standoff. President John Mahama’s government has started a process that may oust the Chief Justice. Afenyo-Markin describes these terms as “questionable.”
The situation has escalated to the Supreme Court. However, a scheduled hearing faced delays when one justice did not appear. The case will continue on May 6.
In the meantime, Afenyo-Markin urges the Ghana Bar Association to speak out. He wants them to defend judicial independence alongside him.
