This will set a bad precedent – Kwesi Botchwey warns on CJ removal

Lawyer Kwesi Botchwey, a member of the NPP Communications Team, has issued a warning. He cautioned that attempts by the Mahama administration to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo could harm Ghana’s democracy.

Speaking on Asaase Radio's The Forum, Botchwey connected these developments to statements from the opposition party. He noted that the NDC leadership expressed a commitment to removing Torkornoo.

Botchwey warned that politicizing the judiciary could lead to future abuses. He said, “If we don’t take care, any president can target judges.” This situation could set a dangerous precedent for Ghana.

He urged the judiciary to defend its independence and uphold the rule of law. “I am calling on our revered justices to condemn this action,” he stated.

Botchwey also raised concerns about potential political retaliation if this effort succeeds. He mentioned hearing members of his party say that if successful, any future CJ could be removed. “This is bad for our democracy,” he concluded.
