Thousands attend burial rites for late Asante Mamponghene

Burial rites for Daasebre Osei Bonsu II have begun in Mampong, Ashanti Region. Thousands of mourners from across the country are attending. The traditional funeral, called Doteyie, started on Thursday, June 6. It will end on Monday, June 9, with final rites by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The mourning period includes drumming, dancing, and sacred rituals. Spiritual leaders lead these customs while wearing traditional regalia. Mourners dressed in black and red on Saturday, June 7, to show grief and respect.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II was born Saint Oswald Gyimah-Kessie on December 31, 1939. He became the Asante Mamponghene on August 25, 1996. He was the 28th occupant of the Silver Stool and Krontihene of Asanteman. He passed away in April 2025 at age 85.

During his reign, he resolved chieftaincy disputes in Mampong. He maintained peace and promoted development in the area. Daasebre was also a strong opponent of illegal mining activities. He played a key role in preventing galamsey operations locally.

As an academic and administrator, he served as Registrar at KNUST from 1991 to 2000. This capped a notable 28-year career in public service.
